The Zaanse Golf Club in Wijdewormer has, by the club's account, more water than any other Dutch course, with islands, ditches and a large lake. On five holes you tee off from an old polder dyke with wide views. Gerard Jol designed the course early in his career.

The Zaanse Golf Club plays at the De Zaanse course in Wijdewormer, close to Amsterdam, Purmerend and Zaandam. The club has been going for more than 35 years and is keen to show that golf is no longer elitist but for everyone.

In the Wormer

The course lies in the Wijde Wormer polder, which Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater drained in 1626 with dozens of windmills. Before that the area was a series of lakes, and the land now lies four metres below sea level. That water is still everywhere: the course runs between islands, ditches and a large lake, and the old dykes give several holes raised tees. Along the way you see plenty of wildlife, especially hares, but also birds of prey and martens.

The course

The course holds A status, par 71 and 5,505 metres, with long and short holes, and there are four short holes alongside the eighteen. Practice facilities are plentiful, and the driving range, which has its own bar, is open in the evening. The terrace overlooks the 18th. Visitors are welcome, and members of partner clubs in the Hospitality Chain pay a lower rate. Book a tee time through reception in advance.
