The Amsterdamse Golf Club, founded in 1934, has played since 1990 on a parkland course in the Houtrakpolder on the west side of Amsterdam. Behind the driving range lie six short practice holes, extended and renewed in 2021.
The Amsterdamsche Golf Club was founded in 1934, the year of the Jordaan riot and the start of work on the Amsterdamse Bos. After years of talks with the city council, Amsterdam finally had a golf course of its own, as other major European cities already did.
From Duivendrecht to the Houtrakpolder
The first course lay near Duivendrecht, on 34 hectares of rented polder land, and was designed by Harry Colt of Colt, Alison & Morrison. The clubhouse by the architect F.A. Warners was ready in April 1935, the course opened in May and the official opening followed on 14 September 1935. In 1984 it turned out that the railways needed the land after all: a new line with a flyover would cut through the course. The club moved to the Bauduinlaan in the Houtrakpolder, where the first ball was struck on 21 September 1990. Some members stayed behind on what was left of the old course, today's Amsterdam Old Course.
The course today
In a region full of polder courses, the club aims to offer a mature parkland course. Working with the architect Gerard Jol, it has improved the course year after year, and new drainage keeps it playable in almost any weather. Members play without tee times. Behind the floodlit driving range lie six short practice holes of 40 to 125 metres, extended and renewed in 2021; played three different ways, they make up 18 holes.
