De Zuid Limburgse in Wittem has, by the club's account, the highest course in the Netherlands. In a Natura 2000 area, a round through the woods gives way to nine holes across open, rolling hills. The first nine were built from 1956 to a design by Hawtree.
De Zuid Limburgse Golf & Country Club Wittem lies near Wittem, in the hills of South Limburg, and according to the club has the highest golf course in the Netherlands. The club celebrates its seventieth anniversary in 2026.
History
In the 1950s a group of South Limburg industrialists, including the engineer N.H. Henket and Van Aken, director-general of the State Mines, played golf in Aachen. They wanted a course in South Limburg too, and with support from the mining industry and Maastricht businesses the money was raised. After talks with the municipality and the province, 54 hectares of the Kruisbos and Schweibergerbos woods became available. Work on the first nine holes began in 1956, to a design by Hawtree.
Woods and hills
The course lies in a large Natura 2000 area, far from crowds and traffic noise. A round comes in two parts: first through the woods, then nine holes across open, rolling hills. The 18 holes play to par 71 and 5,765 metres. Visitors with a club handicap of 45 or lower are welcome and are preferably booked into set blocks around midday or in the afternoon; book by phone or email. New members play nine holes with experienced members at Meet 'n Green evenings. The restaurant serves fine food and welcomes walkers too.
