Golfsociëteit De Lage Vuursche in Den Dolder has an 18-hole Kyle Phillips course on a wooded site. With 56 hectares and a high water table, every square metre had to count, and plenty of water shapes the play.

Golfsociëteit De Lage Vuursche lies near Den Dolder, in the wooded country of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Fifteen years passed between the first idea in 1985 and the opening in 2000, but almost as soon as it opened it was known as one of the best 18-hole courses in the Netherlands, with high standards of quality and service.

A Phillips course

The American architect Kyle Phillips, who later designed Bernardus, was given free rein to build a demanding course. The 56-hectare site, with a high water table, needed a design in which every square metre counts, and water comes into play on many holes. According to the club it is a fine course for members that also brings out the best in top amateurs, and the Dutch federation likes to hold events there.

As a visitor

De Lage Vuursche is an exclusive club and its rules reflect that. Green fee players with handicap 54 are welcome Monday to Thursday and book up to three days ahead, by phone only. Jeans, T-shirts, tracksuits and short shorts are not allowed, and soft-spiked golf shoes are compulsory. On the day you can use the practice facilities: a driving range with covered bays and grass tees with free range balls, two chipping greens, a putting green and a practice bunker.
