Golfclub De Haar plays in the southern park of De Haar Castle, a listed national monument. Frank Pennink designed the first nine holes in 1974; Bruno Steensels extended the course to 18 holes in 2021 and rebuilt the original nine. Narrow fairways, plenty of water and wind on the outer holes shape the play.

Golfclub De Haar plays in the southern park of De Haar Castle near Haarzuilens, a listed national monument of real natural value. The club describes itself as a traditional members' club that values respect for each other, for nature and for the course.

From nine holes to eighteen

The course opened in 1974 with nine holes designed by Frank Pennink. At the end of 2018 work began on extending it to 18 holes to a design by Bruno Steensels, who also drew The International in Amsterdam and De Goyer in Eemnes. Nine new holes were added and the original nine were completely rebuilt with new drainage and soil. The new course opened in September 2021: par 71, with a slope rating of 142. Because the park is a protected monument, the work was done with great care for its nature and history.

The course

The park is planted with beech, oak, lime, chestnut, an apple orchard, rhododendrons and rarer species such as a sequoia and a hickory. The course mixes short and longer holes and above all demands good course management: narrow fairways, plenty of water and, on the outer holes, often wind. The 2nd briefly leaves the park and is a risk-and-reward hole with water. Steensels' advice: play to your ability and choose the right tee. The club has been GEO certified since 2018 and plans to lengthen three holes and build a new clubhouse in the park in the coming years.
