The Noord-Nederlandse Golf & Country Club started out in 1950 on the airfield at Eelde and has played on the De Poll estate in Glimmen since 1954. Sir Guy Campbell designed the first nine; Frank Pennink extended the course to 18 holes in 1984, and Donald Steel refined it further after that. Narrow fairways run past ponds, wooded banks, old trees and rhododendrons, and the 1913 villa serves as the clubhouse.
The Noord-Nederlandse Golf & Country Club began playing on the airfield at Eelde in 1950 and moved in 1954 to the De Poll estate in Glimmen, just south of Groningen. On Ascension Day 1954 the president of the Dutch federation, A. Calkoen van Limmen, opened the nine holes there.
A romantic estate
De Poll was laid out around 1900 in the romantic landscape style, with wooded banks, ponds and rolling views, and historic details are everywhere. Some of the pines have stood since 1816, when the physician Johan Coenraad van Hasselt turned the heath into pine wood and farmland. The 1913 villa by Gerrit Nijhuis, looking out over the Drentsche Aa river, is now the clubhouse. The coffee merchant Willem Rost Onnes sold the 40-hectare estate to the club in 1951.
The course
The Scot Sir Guy Campbell designed the first nine holes. In 1984 Frank Pennink extended the course to 18, adding a stretch of woodland with the remains of a pingo, and Donald Steel refined it further after that. The 18 holes play to par 72 and 5,971 metres. Ponds, unusual trees and rhododendrons line the narrow fairways, and some visitors come specially when they are in flower. The 1st crosses the entrance drive, so mind the traffic light. The driving range was rebuilt in 2020, with Toptracer and free balls.

Veendam
Golfclub Landgoed De Compagnie
Golfclub Landgoed De Compagnie lies on the edge of Veendam, in a nature area of some 100 hectares. Gerard Jol designed the course in two phases; the first nine holes were laid out as a woodland course in 1990, and the more open second nine followed in 2006. Water, changes in elevation and large, contoured greens guarded by bunkers shape the play, and summer greens are in use all year.
