The Drentsche Golf & Country Club lies in Zeijerveen, close to Assen. The complex is part of a 240-hectare nature area, of which 140 hectares are laid out as golf course, and the club calls itself the largest and most varied course in the northern Netherlands.
Three loops
Gerard Jol designed the 27-hole championship course, split into three loops with distinct characters. Geel (yellow) is open with water hazards, Rood (red) has some woodland holes and large lakes, and Wit (white) lies in an existing stand of woodland. The pairings differ in par: Rood-Geel is par 72, Wit-Rood par 73 and Geel-Wit par 71. Along the way you look out over woods, fields and avenues of oak.
Practice and staying over
There is also a 9-hole par 3 course, which is qualifying, so you can earn your club handicap 54 there. The driving range uses Inrange radar technology, which tracks every ball and sends the data to a touchscreen and the app, and is floodlit until 9 pm from Tuesday to Friday. You can eat in the clubhouse, and if you want to stay longer there is the Golf Lodge on the course. Green fee players book online and bring a valid Dutch federation card.
