Fleetwood and Rai Share the Lead After a Thrilling Start at the Abu Dhabi Championship
A bogey-free 64 from Tommy Fleetwood and a late eagle from Aaron Rai set up a packed leaderboard in the desert, with the chasing pack just two shots back.

Tommy Fleetwood picked up right where he left off in the desert. The Englishman, a two-time winner of this event, opened with a flawless eight-under 64 at Yas Links, a round built on relentless iron play and a putter that finally cooperated on the grainy Paspalum greens.
Aaron Rai matched him late in the day in very different fashion. Level with four to play, Rai holed a mid-iron from 178 yards for eagle on the 15th, then birdied two of his last three to grab a share of the lead just before darkness fell.
A leaderboard with no room to breathe
Behind the leading pair, the congestion is remarkable. Six players sit at six-under, including last season's Race to Dubai runner-up and a pair of tour rookies making just their third start at this level. Nobody inside the top twenty shot worse than 68.
The scoring conditions had plenty to do with that. The wind that usually defends Yas Links never arrived, and the tour moved several tees forward in anticipation of gusts that showed up on the forecast but not on the ground.
"You have days here where 64 feels impossible," Fleetwood said afterwards. "Today was a day where you knew you had to take it, because everyone else would."
What to watch on Friday
The forecast finally promises wind: 20 to 25 km/h off the Gulf by early afternoon. That should split the draw and put a premium on the low, controlled ball flight that Rai in particular has built his game around.
Fleetwood and Rai go out together at 12:40 local time. If the gusts arrive on schedule, the players who tee off early may have already posted their numbers by the time the leaders reach the turn.
The winner on Sunday takes home a first prize of $1.53 million and, perhaps more importantly with the season entering its decisive stretch, 750 Race to Dubai points.
