Toxandria was founded in 1928 as the first golf club in Brabant and Limburg. Harry S. Colt designed its wooded course on sandy soil and heath, and most holes have been restored to his original plans.
The Noord-Brabantsche Golfclub Toxandria was founded on 5 July 1928, making it the first golf club in Brabant and Limburg. Charles Stulemeijer, an industrialist from Breda, bought the land and founded the club. The name refers to Toxandria, the old name for the Kempen region.
Colt in Molenschot
In the autumn of 1928 the contractor Copijn of Groenekan began building to a design by Harry S. Colt. On 43 hectares of rough sandy ground and heather, Colt drew nine holes, which opened on 14 September 1929. The Second World War was hard on the club: a nearby military airfield was a target for Allied bombing, and the German occupiers used part of the land and requisitioned the clubhouse. Even so, Toxandria hosted the International Open in 1950 and 1965. In 1994 extra land allowed two new holes designed by J.F. Dudok van Heel, so players no longer had to cross the Veenstraat. Most holes have since been restored to Colt's original design.
The course today
The fairways run over naturally rolling sand and heath in the woods between Breda and Tilburg; par 72, 6,077 metres. Since 1984 Toxandria has hosted the Dutch Junior Open, where many players who later became well-known professionals had their first taste of top-level golf. Range balls are free, and the practice hole is built to the same standard as the course. After your round you can sit by the fire in the clubhouse or on the terrace beside the 18th green.
